When My Kitten Laid Across My Keyboard

I have learned over the years that some of God’s sweetest lessons come through the most unexpected moments.

Sometimes they come through Scripture.

Sometimes through a conversation.

Sometimes through a quiet whisper from the Holy Spirit.

And sometimes…

They come through a cat choosing to hunker down for a nap across your keyboard.

Yes, you read that right.

I was sitting at my desk, focused on the words in front of me, when my fluffy little “assistant” decided it was time to make his contribution to the project. Without hesitation, Miloh stretched himself across my keyboard, leaving behind a trail of random letters, symbols, and whatever else his 12 pound body managed to create.

At first, I have to admit, I wasn’t exactly filled with gratitude.

I had a thought to finish.

A sentence to complete.

A chapter to write.

And my cat had other plans.

But as I looked at him comfortably settled on my keyboard, completely unaware of the interruption he had caused, I couldn’t help but laugh.

And then, as so often happens when I slow down enough to listen, I sensed the Lord gently whispering a reminder to my heart.

Pay attention.

Because isn’t this what life with Jesus looks like so often?

We make our plans. We organize our days. We set our goals. We have a vision of how things should unfold.

And then life happens.

A phone call interrupts. A schedule changes. A door closes. A need arises. Or a cat decides he has something important to add to your writing project.

The interruption may not have been what we planned, but it may be exactly where God wants to meet us.

Learning to Welcome the Unexpected

I think sometimes we mistakenly believe that a fruitful life is a perfectly organized life. We assume that if we can just get everything in order, stay ahead of the demands, and keep interruptions at bay, we will finally experience peace.

But I’m learning that peace doesn’t come from controlling every detail.

Peace comes from knowing Who is in control.

The truth is, God is not intimidated by interruptions. He is not frustrated when our carefully planned days take an unexpected turn. In fact, some of the most meaningful moments of my life have happened when my plans were interrupted by something I never saw coming.

  • A conversation I didn’t expect when an old man arrived for a visit in the middle of my school day–––life-changing for my kids and their mother.

  • A need I didn’t anticipate.

  • A moment when God asked me to slow down and simply be present.

Maybe that is why this little moment with my cat made me smile. He reminded me that I don’t have to rush through every interruption. I don’t have to see every unexpected moment as an inconvenience.

Sometimes interruptions are invitations.

  • Invitations to pause.

  • Invitations to notice.

  • Invitations to remember that I am walking with-God, not simply working for Him.

The Gift of Slowing Down

As I watched my kitten settle in, completely content, I realized something: he wasn’t worried about my deadlines.

He wasn’t concerned about my word count.

He wasn’t wondering if I would finish the chapter on time.

He was simply present.

And maybe, just maybe, I needed that reminder.

How often do I rush from one thing to the next without noticing the beauty right in front of me? How often do I focus so much on accomplishing what I believe God has called me to do that I forget to enjoy the journey with Him?

The Lord has been teaching me that productivity is not the same thing as fruitfulness.

Fruitfulness comes from abiding.

It comes from staying connected to Him, listening for His voice, and allowing Him to lead the pace and direction of our lives.

Even our work.

Even our writing.

Even our businesses and ministries.

Even our homeschooling.

Especially those.

A Lesson From My Furry Co-Worker

I have to admit, my cat may have been more obedient to the moment than I was.

He knew exactly what he wanted to do.

Rest.

Be present.

Enjoy the moment with me–––he’s very attached to me.

Meanwhile, I was trying to accomplish something.

Isn’t that often how we are?

We are so focused on what is next that we miss what is right now.

We are thinking about the next project, the next deadline, the next responsibility, while Jesus is inviting us to simply sit with Him in this moment.

My cat didn’t ruin my writing time that day.

He enriched it.

He reminded me that joy doesn’t always come through accomplishing something significant. Sometimes it comes through a laugh, a pause, a little interruption, and a reminder that God is near. I love Dallas Willard’s definition of joy. Joy is a pervasive sense of well-being.

The Beauty of a With-God Life

As I look back on that funny little moment, I realize it was more than just a cat settling in for a snooze across my keyboard.

It was another gentle reminder of what I have discovered throughout this journey:

I was never meant to do life, business, ministry, or writing apart from Him.

The with-God life means inviting Him into every part of our days—not just the big decisions, but the small moments, too.

It means recognizing that He is present in the sacred and the ordinary.

It means trusting that even interruptions can become opportunities to hear His voice.

So, friend, the next time your plans are disrupted, take a moment before you rush past it.

Ask the Lord, What are You showing me here?

Maybe it is a reminder to slow down.

Maybe it is an invitation to rest.

Maybe it is simply His way of reminding you that He is right beside you.

And if a cat happens to walk across your keyboard in the process …

Well, maybe smile.

You never know.

It just might be a Holy Interruption.

Because the sweetest moments with God are often found in the places we least expect them.

And sometimes, He may even send a chubby kitten to help us remember.

Remember, He is leading—even in the interruptions.
